SUMMARY:Rhetoric and Reason
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with The La Grua Center\, Rhetoric and Reason pairs historically significant speeches by Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, Abraham Lincoln\, Martin Luther King\, Jr. and more with musical selections that amplify the emotional and historical impact of their words. These speeches demonstrate the power of the spoken word as a means of protest and civil discourse\, and highlight the significance of civic participation in matters of society\, politics\, ethics and legislation. This event will showcase the voices of women and people of color in juxtaposition to those who have typically held positions of power.  Rhetoric and Reason provides an opportunity to explore oration as a form of activism\, and the timelessness of certain sentiments that are echoed across decades\, race\, gender and ability. We  encourage the public to think critically about how these speeches impacted our country. Generously funded by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut. \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public on Wednesday\, October 7th at 6pm at the La Grua Center.

DESCRIPTION:An evening series of stargazing\, navigation\, and history on the grounds of the Lighthouse Museum. \nBuilding on the themes of the September program\, this evening will explore the mythology behind the constellations\, how the night sky has changed over time\, and the growing impact of light pollution on our view of the stars. \nBring a blanket\, pack some snacks and raise a glass under the stars. \nLeslie F. Brown\, Ph.D.\, Professor Emerita of Physics\, Astronomy & Geophysics at Connecticut College \nand  \nDouglas Gobeille\, Teaching Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Rhode Island.  \nThursday\, October 8\, 2026 \n7 Water Street\, Stonington Borough \n7 – 9 PM \n$25 suggested donation per blanket – $20 for members \nPresentation begins 7:30PM.
