SUMMARY:Doris Kearns Goodwin: The Meaning of America
DESCRIPTION:Historic Stonington and the UNITED present a special conversation with Pulitzer Prize-winning\, New York Times #1 best-selling author Doris Kearns Goodwin on the meaning of America in celebration of the United States Semiquincentennial. Doris will be in conversation with Adi Ignatius\, former editor in chief for Harvard Business Review and Board President of Historic Stonington\, on Friday\, July 31st at 7pm.\nDoris Kearns Goodwin is a world-renowned\, presidential historian\, public speaker and Pulitzer Prize-winning\, New York Times #1 best-selling author and partner in Pastimes Productions. She is often called upon by the news media and late night TV hosts as well as hundreds of companies\, educational institutions\, government agencies and nonprofits to share her vast knowledge of leadership and provide historical context for current day events\, as our democracy is challenged\, international wars rage\, and we continue to struggle in a divided and polarized country.\nHer eighth book\, An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s\, was published in Spring 2024\, became an instant #1 New York Times bestseller and is being developed as a feature film by Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman and Goodwin’s own Pastimes Productions. Artfully weaving together biography\, memoir\, and history\, this new book takes readers on the emotional journey Doris and her husband\, Richard (Dick) Goodwin embarked upon in the last years of his life as they delved into more than 300 boxes of letters\, diaries\, documents\, and memorabilia that Dick had saved for more than fifty years.\nIn Fall 2024\, Goodwin’s first book for young readers\, The Leadership Journey: How Four Kids Became President\, was published. In 2020\, she executive produced her first documentary miniseries\, “Washington” for the History Channel\, through her independent production company\, Pastimes Productions Inc. Miniseries on Abraham Lincoln\, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Roosevelt followed.\nGoodwin previously authored nine critically acclaimed and New York Times bestselling books\, including the Carnegie Medal winner The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt\, William Howard Taft\, and the Golden Age of Journalism and Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln\, in part the basis for Steven Spielberg’s film “Lincoln\,” which earned 12 Academy Award® nominations\, including an Academy Award for actor Daniel Day-Lewis for his portrayal of the 16th president. Team of Rivals is often cited as an inspiration for business and political leaders\, including President Barack Obama\, and was awarded the prestigious Lincoln Prize\, the inaugural Book Prize for American History\, and Goodwin in 2016 was the first historian to receive the Lincoln Leadership Prize from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library Foundation.\nGoodwin was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in History for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II. \n

SUMMARY:Rhetoric and Reason
DESCRIPTION:Presented in partnership with The La Grua Center\, Rhetoric and Reason pairs historically significant speeches by Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, Abraham Lincoln\, Martin Luther King\, Jr. and more with musical selections that amplify the emotional and historical impact of their words. These speeches demonstrate the power of the spoken word as a means of protest and civil discourse\, and highlight the significance of civic participation in matters of society\, politics\, ethics and legislation. This event will showcase the voices of women and people of color in juxtaposition to those who have typically held positions of power.  Rhetoric and Reason provides an opportunity to explore oration as a form of activism\, and the timelessness of certain sentiments that are echoed across decades\, race\, gender and ability. We  encourage the public to think critically about how these speeches impacted our country. Generously funded by the Community Foundation of Eastern Connecticut. \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public on Wednesday\, October 7th at 6pm at the La Grua Center.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the La Grua Center on Wednesday\, October 28th for a fascinating evening with Dr. Cornelia H. Dayton. Dr. Dayton will highlight New England women on the homefront whose lives were suddenly or violently disrupted and who wrote about it. Their stories help us grapple with the emotional toll exacted by political strife and war. Diaries\, letters\, and court records offer windows onto white and Black women’s fears and strategizing. Recently retired\, she taught courses on ‘vast’ early America\, law in US society\, women and gender\, and Revolutionary Boston at the University of Connecticut.

SUMMARY:Rollie McKenna: Life and Photography Premiere
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the world premiere screening of the new film Rollie McKenna: Life and Photography presented by Historic Stonington and the UNITED with support from Connecticut Humanities and the Rosalie Thorne McKenna Foundation. \nUsing personal recollections\, interviews with family and friends\, local and national archives\, Rollie McKenna: Life and Photography explores the unconventional life and career of Rollie McKenna (1918–2003). McKenna documented an entire generation of American arts and culture thanks to her prolific career as a photographer\, which afforded her both personal and professional independence. Photography allowed McKenna to travel the world and cultivate her craft free from the typical expectations of American women in the mid-twentieth century. It also offered her access to a privileged circle of authors and artists. Her subjects included Dylan Thomas\, T.S. Eliot\, Derek Walcott\, Robert Frost\, Edith Sitwell\, Elizabeth Bishop\, James Merrill\, Alexander Calder\, Helen Keller\, and Robert Graves\, to name just a few. Her local photographs document the local landscape of Stonington Borough as a colorful fishing village populated with artists and academics. Life and Photography will appeal to audiences interested in 20th century literature\, local history\, portrait photography\, architecture\, literary history\, popular culture\, queer culture\, feminist culture\, and poetry. \nRollie McKenna: Life and Photography is directed by Christopher Kepple; edited by Peter Huoppi; with music by Antonio Forte; and narration by Lisa Starr. \n  \nClick Here For Tickets
