SUMMARY:Emily Anhalt presents\, "Enraged: Why Violent Times Need Ancient Greek Myths"
DESCRIPTION:Join the Stonington Historical Society at the R.W. Woolworth Library at 40 Palmer Street on Sunday\, September 24 at 5 pm as Emily Katz Anhalt explores how ancient history offers insights into today’s contentious times. Her newest publication\, Enraged: Why Violent Times Need Ancient Greek Myths\, was recently released on August 22 by Yale University Press. The professor of ancient Greek and Latin at Sarah Lawrence College reveals how three masterworks of classical Greek literature – Homer’s Iliad\, Sophocles’ Ajax\, and Euripides’ Hecuba – can help us end the glorification or tolerance of violence and recognize violent revenge as a marker of ruinous\, irrational thinking. \nWhat are some of the lessons that ancient Greek myths provide? \n\nDevelop the farsightedness and other means to control our own rage;\nResist temptations to glorify violent rage and those who would indulge in it;\nRecognize that compassion\, rational thought\, and debate best promote our own interests.\n\n  \n“Greek myths help to arm us against the tyrants we might serve and the tyrants we might become\,’’ says Anhalt. \nAnhalt teaches Classical Languages and Literature at Sarah Lawrence College. A graduate of Dartmouth College\, she received her Ph.D. in Classical Philology from Yale University and has also taught Greek mythology\, Classical languages\, literature\, and history at Yale and at Trinity College. The author of Solon the Singer: Politics and Poetics\, Anhalt lives in Guilford\, CT. \nThe Stonington Historical Society\, Inc.\, founded in 1895\, seeks to preserve\, interpret and celebrate the history of Stonington. It presents programs and exhibits and maintains three sites open to the public: the Old Lighthouse Museum; the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House\, a National Historic Landmark and the home of the discoverer of Antarctica; and the Richard W. Woolworth Library\, a research archive of local history. For more information on these sites and the Society’s programs\, exhibits\, and collections\, visit our website\,stoningtonhistory.org\, or call 860-535-8445. \nAnhalt poster

SUMMARY:History of the Mystic River in Maps: 1620-1960 with George Crouse
DESCRIPTION:    George Crouse\, President of the Indian & Colonial Research Center and retired social studies teacher and geographer\, will lead us through the historic maps of the Mystic River Valley from the collections of the Indian & Colonial Research Center (ICRC) on Thursday\, September 14th at 6 pm at the La Grua Center in Stonington. The ICRC was formed in 1965 to preserve the extensive historical collections of Mrs. Eva Lutz Butler\, a teacher\, local historian\, and anthropologist. Collections include manuscripts\, out of print books\, vintage maps and photographs\, Indian artifacts\, genealogical material and notebooks relating to the Southeastern New England Indian and Colonial period. \nHistoric maps provide invaluable insights into historical research including land uses\, property boundaries\, family genealogy and inheritance practices. These maps often note aspects of the cultural landscape that can be obscured over time. In the digital world of google maps and ubiquitous GPS devices\, cartography is something of a lost art. Cartographers combined extensive skills in science\, engineering\, and surveying combined with beautiful artistic flourishes to create lasting images of the landscape. \nGeorge Crouse is a graduate of Stonington High School and taught social studies and served as the tennis coach there for more than 40 years. He has also served in local government on the Board of Police Commissioners\, more than five years as a selectman\, and also as an interim first selectman. \nThis program is free and open to all. The Stonington Historical Society seeks to preserve\, interpret\, and celebrate the history of all of Stonington. Founded in 1895\, the Society operates the Old Lighthouse Museum (1840)\, the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House (1853)\, a National Historic Landmark\, and the Richard W. Woolworth Library & Research Center.  For additional information please contact Elizabeth Wood\, Executive Director\ndirector@stoningtonhistory.org                                  860-535-8445 x10
