On this day in 1907, the "Larchmont" sunk off the On this day in 1907, the "Larchmont" sunk off the coast of Block Island, after colliding with a three-masted coal schooner, the "Harry Knowlton". The "Larchmont" had left Providence that evening, bound for New York. It was a frigid evening, with the temperature hovering around zero, and twenty foot waves made for a challenging ride. Around ten thirty, the young captain, George McVay, retired to his cabin, leaving his first pilot in charge of the ship. Not long after, lights of an approaching ship were seen - careful to not collide, the "Larchmont" shifted course slightly. The "Harry Knowlton", the ship approaching, also changed course to avoid collision, putting them straight in each other's path. The collision badly damaged both ships, severing the main steam line of the "Larchmont", leaving her without power. The crew of the "Harry Knowlton" realized they were taking on too much water to make it to shore, and abandoned the ship in a life boat - all survived. The passengers on the "Larchmont" wouldn't be so lucky. The severed steam pipes released scalding steam throughout the lower decks, badly burning all who came in contact with it. Those who made it through the darkness to the upper decks faced howling 60 mph winds, with waves crashing over the ship - the steamer was going down, fast. Those who were able scrambled into life boats, and within fifteen minutes of the crash, the "Larchmont" was gone beneath the waves. The next morning, life boats began washing up on shore on Block Island, and it was a grim scene. Many of those in the life boats were frost bitten and hypothermic, while others had frozen to death. Of the approximately 156 passengers and crew members aboard the "Larchmont", only nineteen survived, and two of those succumbed to pneumonia within a week. Seventy four bodies washed up on Block Island beaches and were shipped home for burial. The remainder were never recovered.

Tired of the snow already? Maybe a quick trip down Tired of the snow already? Maybe a quick trip downhill in a toboggan with friends will change your perspective!

Did you know that "toboggan" likely comes from the Algonquin language, but this type of sled was a traditional form of cargo transport used by the Innu, Cree and Ojibewe tribes of North American. They have been used in the Great Plains and the Great lakes since 3000 BCE.

Four unidentified people, posing in a toboggan, from the Stone Acres Collection.

The wedding skirt of Mary Fish Noyes Silliman. Bor The wedding skirt of Mary Fish Noyes Silliman. Born in North Stonington, Mary married her first husband, John Noyes in 1758. An epileptic, John died young, and Mary married her second husband, Gold Silliman in 1775. During the Revolution, Gold was kidnapped by Loyalists and jailed in New York for over a year, during which time Mary was responsible for running the family farm and looking after two small children.

As you can see, the fabric is in excellent condition - the skirt appears brand new, which is quite a feat considering its age. The condition also tells us about the story of this garment after Mary's death - it was lovingly and carefully kept by subsequent generations of her family before it was given to Historic Stonington in 2017.

The skirt is a hand sewn, Lisere Silk Taffeta Brocade Overskirt.

If you'd like to know more about Mary's fascinating life, check out "The Way of Duty" by Joy Day Buel and Richard Buel Jr.
