Portrait of Lucy Ann Noyes Williams, born in Stoni

Portrait of Lucy Ann Noyes Williams, born in Stonington November 4, 1805 to Zerviah Wheeler and Joseph Noyes. She married Seth Williams on February 23, 1827 and they went on to have ten children: Lucy, Eunice, Seth, Harriet, Gurdon, Joseph, William, Benjamin, Abbie and Orin. Lucy's husband, Seth, died in 1854, but she went on to live in Mystic until June 7, 1890, when she died at the age of 84.

"This is a picture of the building of the upper dam at the Dean's Mill Water Works, that supplies water to Stonington and Mystic. This was probably about 1890. The people in the picture are Mr. Asa Wilcox in the lower part of the dam; Mr. Calvin Wilcox, brother of Asa in the upper part near the hoist, and next to him was their cousin Fred Wilcox. The oxen belonged to Asa and Calvin who inherited them from their father, Nelson. This picture was given to me September 28, 1950 by Miss Phebe Wilcox, youngest sister of Asa and Calvin. I am second cousin to Phebe Wilcox, as her mother and my grandfather were brother and sister - Charles F. Noyes." Gift of Janice and John McDermott.

Unidentified worker in the basement of the Atwood Machine Company, 1940s. During World War II, the Atwood Machine Company produced goods for the war effort. These included: ammunition machinery, cam limit stops, depth charges and depth recording charts, gray iron castings, gun carriage parts, gun mounts, gyroscope parts, machine tool parts, submarine parts and truck axels. This photograph is the gift of Judith Honiss.

Anna Coit's final poems, lost for years, were finally recovered in late 2022, making possible the book she had envisioned in the last year of her life. The proceeds from this book will benefit the North Stonington Historical Society, of which she was a founder in 1970. A payment to the NSHS of $35 dollars per book will reserve your copy of Early and Late, a hardcover book of 124 pages containing 114 poems and prose pieces, 79 color photographs (including reproductions of some of her own artworks), an Introduction, and Notes. Order and payment information can be found on northstoningtonhistorical.org now thru Sept. 14th. Copies may also be ordered and paid for at the Open House on September 14th.

We recently received this beautiful commemorative medal of the Nathaniel B. Palmer Ice Breaker and Research Vessel, donated by Alexander L. Sutherland, Jr., the man responsible for the acquisition of this ship for the United States Antarctic Program. You can see it on display in the Captain Palmer House, along with a piece of Swedish steel - the same type used to line the hull of this ship.

The graduating class of 1978 from Stonington High

The graduating class of 1978 from Stonington High School took an unique approach to their yearbook. The opening pages read: "There was music here, sometimes beautiful, often harsh and discordant. It has touched us all reflecting our joys, wonders, and regrets - emotions which are all a part of the harmony that makes a song complete. And though we are gone, the music remains - an echo of what once was." Throughout the yearbook, popular songs give a soundtrack to their senior year. In an effort to capture the 'Spirit of '78' - we have created a Youtube playlist which includes the songs from the yearbook, as well as other chart topping hits from 1977.
