Stonington During the American Revolution

On August 30, 1775, Captain James Wallace, commander of H.M.S. Rose, led an attack on Stonington, cannonading the village at Long Point. This was the first British naval attack on the Continental shores of America which was successfully repulsed by the Americans. Thus began Stonington’s role in the War for Independence. This book records Stonington’s participation in the war at home and on the battlefields. It is a chronicle of the experiences of over 300 Stonington soldiers throughout the war period. Included is a compilation of their service records as well as illustrations of many original documents of the period.
