Working the archives can be tedious, but every onc Working the archives can be tedious, but every once in awhile we make some truly wonderful discoveries. While transcribing the diary of David Sherman Hart, we found this entry about Nelson Brown, who died March 22, 1865. It isn't often that we find new anecdotes about Stonington's past residents but this one certainly caught our interest!

The USS Terry in Stonington Harbor, c. 1914. Built The USS Terry in Stonington Harbor, c. 1914. Built in Newport News, VA the ship was launched in August of 1909. In 1911, this ship made the first airplane rescue at sea, saving the life of James McCurdy ten miles off the coast of Cuba. Terry was part of the Atlantic Fleet Torpedo Flotilla, and spent her winters in Cuban waters conducting torpedo exercises. During World War I, she began operations along the Atlantic coast escorting merchantmen bound for Europe. In 1918, she joined the destroyer force based in Queenstown, Ireland, where she escorted convoys through the submarine-infested waters surrounding the British Isles. After the war, Terry returned to the United States where she was decommissioned in November 1919. However, in 1924, Terry was transferred to the Coast Guard, and was based in New York City as part of the Rum Patrol. She served with the Coast Guard until October of 1930, when she was returned to the Navy, on a decommissioned status for salvage. After less than thirty years of service, the USS Terry was scrapped. The ship was 293 feet long, with a beam of 27 feet and a draft of a little more than 8 feet.

Eighty-eight years ago tomorrow, at approximately Eighty-eight years ago tomorrow, at approximately 3pm, the Great Hurricane of 1938 hit Stonington. The storm killed more than 680 people, damaged or destroyed more than 57,000 homes and caused $306 million (equal to about $4.7 billion in modern dollars) in property losses across New England. The residents of Stonington Borough were without power for five weeks. Damaged trees and buildings could still be seen in the affected areas as late as 1951. Along the Stonington shorefront buildings were swept off their foundations and found two miles inland. Rescuers in Mystic found live fish and crabs in kitchen drawers and cabinets while searching for survivors.

This photograph shows Stonington residents surveying the damage. Photograph taken by Williams Haynes.

Did you know that in the 1930s the Lighthouse Muse Did you know that in the 1930s the Lighthouse Museum also operated a sort of tea room? People could come and enjoy tea and light sandwiches on a small terrace behind the Lighthouse, as this photograph shows. (The ell is just visible on the right.) The area was completely destroyed by the Hurricane of 1938 and never rebuilt. The woman who ran the tea service and provided concessions lived on the second floor of the Lighthouse.

Anita Thayer (1890-1976) was born in Stonington in Anita Thayer (1890-1976) was born in Stonington in July of 1890 to Edward and Marietta Thayer. Her father worked as a bookkeeper in Stonington and later in Newport, when the family moved sometime between 1900 and 1910. In 1913, Anita married William A. Edward of Newport. His family was not wealthy and he supported his wife first as a gardener for the large summer "cottages" in Newport, and later in Manhattan as a chauffeur for a private family. Anita and William raised two sons, and at the time of her death in 1976, she had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Could she ever have guessed how her life might have turned out when this picture was taken?
