Preservation

Your gift helps us to preserve four historic properties, including the Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House (1853), a National Historic Landmark. as well as the Lighthouse Museum (1840), the Ocean Bank (1851), and the Arcade (1837). Preservation also include the care and keeping of artifacts, furniture, manuscripts, and more related to the history of ALL of Stonington.

Education

Your gift helps support our educational programming and provide access for all. We love to engage young people and teach them about transformative moments in Stonington’s history. We explore topics like enslavement, economy, industry, transportation, and epic events like the Battle of Stonington or the Hurricane of 1938. Field trips, family activities, curriculum, and professional development for educators are an important aspect of our work and always offered without charge.

Programs

A robust offering of programs and events keeps us engaged with our community. We offer a wide range of programs, workshops, and events that cover a wealth of topics. Clipper ships, navigation, Portuguese fishing in Stonington, a history of the Steamboat Hotel, are just a few of the topics explored this past year. Let us know what you want to see next!

New Scholarship

Every year we choose new themes to explore. Community collection days have brought wonderful items into our collection. Our oral history program adds to our understanding of Stonington’s history over the last 100 years. And, each issue of our quarterly newsletter, Historic Stonington, features an original researched article on a local history topic.
