This photograph was taken in the approximate location of where Seafood Etc. stands today, looking down toward Mechanic Street. It is a fascinating look at just how much farmland was still in Pawcatuck in the early 20th century.

Join us at the Mystic VFW on March 4th at 6pm for Join us at the Mystic VFW on March 4th at 6pm for this fun and illuminating program. Brothers John and Scott Fain will give a presentation about their father, Robert Bindo Fain (1923-1991), and his experiences in the South Pacific during World War II. A Mystic native, Fain was drafted into the Army Air Forces and served on board a B-25 bomber. He flew in 57 missions and collected dozens of photographs, military records, and artifacts that tell the story of his experiences as a gunner in the South Pacific theater from 1943 until 1945. Many of these photographs depict “nose art”, decorative painting usually on the fuselage of World War II era airplanes, depicting women from popular culture. Fain was shot down twice and awarded the Purple Heart. He later worked for the Cottrell Company and as a machinist at Electric Boat.

Due to the graphic nature of the artworks discussed in this presentation, this program is for mature audiences only. You've been warned!

Willanna Austin Wagner (1853-1931) was born in Pit Willanna Austin Wagner (1853-1931) was born in Pittsburgh, PA. Her father died when she was three years old in 1857. Ten years later, her younger brother and only sibling, was hit by a train on Easter Sunday and killed. Undeterred, Willanna and her mother, Eliza, had to make a go of things alone - no easy feat for two women of color in the years after the Civil War. Despite their difficult situation, Willanna attended and graduated from Wilberforce College in Ohio, and upon graduation moved back to Pennsylvania where she worked as a teacher. In 1881, she married John Wagner, and the young couple moved to Stonington. John operated a barber shop on Water Street for more than forty years. Willanna and John built a home on Trumbull Avenue in 1893, one of only two black families in the neighborhood. They are buried together in Williamsport, PA.

This portrait of Willanna is in the Hallie Q. Brown Collection in the Ohio History Connection, out of Columbus, Ohio, and is used with their permission.
