Elise Owen, Spring 1941. How did this local woma Elise Owen, Spring 1941.

How did this local woman become one of the military's top flight instructors in World War II?

From a 1978 Westerly Sun Article by Don Lewis: "The story is familiar. Wanting to learn aeronautics from the ground up, she tried to enroll in a number of flight mechanics' schools but was repeatedly turned down because she was a woman. "I was furious, I got myself a lot of change and went into a phone booth and began calling everywhere. Finally I found a little school in Hartford which would accept me. I went. The teacher simply handed me overalls and told me to break down an engine. With help, I did." Before Pearl Harbor, Miss Owen had not only completed the mechanics' course, but had completed all necessary flight training at Brainard Field and held her private and commercial pilot's licenses and had qualified as a flight instructor as well. Then it was off to Tulsa, OK where she served as flight instructor at the Spartan School of Aeronautics, training military pilots who were in short supply in the early stages of the war. "I had the problem students. Before a student was washed out of school, he was assigned to me. If another instructor was afraid to fly with a particular student, I flew with him." After preparing a 'Course of Instruction for Instructors; and turning down the school's directorship, Miss Owen returned to Linden Hall and taught flying at Stonington, Plainfield and Waterford Airports."

Did you know that Elise Owen also knew Amelia Earhart? That's a story for another time.
