Now that spring has officially sprung, we are back

Now that spring has officially sprung, we are back out in the community working on restoring our local family burial grounds. Our event on May 4th takes place rain or shine (within reason) so be sure to dress appropriately. Due to the limited parking at the site, we encourage volunteers to carpool, or park at the Captain Nathaniel Palmer House and walk over to the cemetery.

Turquoise colored enamel locket featuring a gold hand holding a small pearl between the thumb and forefinger. Inside are two unidentified photographs of men. This beautiful piece belonged to Juliet Palmer Fanning, one of Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer's sisters, and was donated by her great-niece Mrs. Raynham Townshend.

The ship Oriental was built by Jacob Bell in New York for A.A. Low & Brothers in 1849. She was 185 feet long, 36 feet in breadth, and built of live oak, white oak, locust and cedar. When completed, she had cost approximately $70,000 to build. However, in one trip to London in 1850, the revenue on the tea alone was $48,000. It was the first American ship to carry tea cargo from China to London, and held the record for fastest voyage from Hong Kong to New York (81 days). Unfortunately, the Oriental’s career was short. She was lost on the River Min when she was towed out of Fuzhou (Foochow) by local boats and under her pilot’s directions, hit a rock and sank on February 25, 1854. In her five year career, she had been captained by both Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer and his younger brother Theodore.

Join us for an Adventure in Wonderland on Saturday

Join us for an Adventure in Wonderland on Saturday, May 18th. This collaboration with Historic Stonington and the Stonington Garden Club is a celebration of Tea and Flowers. Walk through a stunning array of floral arrangements in the historic Captain Nathaniel B. Palmer House, and enjoy a proper tea under the tent. The 1pm seating is geared toward children and will feature special guests Alice, the Queen of Hearts and the Mad Hatter. At 3pm, horticulturalist Tovah Martin will be speaking on the history of wardian cases and begonias, with tea to follow. Tickets are available on https://ow.ly/RMlZ50R529f
