19th century fan made of sandal wood and cream colored silk, most likely brought back from China or another eastern country during the 1850s. While today we might only think of fans as a way to keep ourselves cool in the hot summer months, the fan is also a symbol of wealth or royalty - an idea which stretches as far back as the ancient civilization of Egypt and Babylon. In western culture, fans were commonly associated with the sophistication of the upper class. In the 19th century, fans were an accepted part of courtship, and could be used to express secret messages, mostly to flirt. We don't know who this fan belonged to, but due to the care in which it was saved, we can recognize that this was a prized possession.

Despite being celebrated by countries around the world, Mother's Day as we recognize it today, originated in the US. Anna Jarvis, of Philadelphia, held a memorial service at her late mother's church in Grafton, WV on May 12, 1907. Jarvis' mother was a social activist and community organizer during the Civil War. One of her programs was an organization of mothers who remained neutral during the war and provided aid to Union and Confederate soldiers. After the War, her work continued, and she hosted a "Mothers Friendship Day" in 1868. Soldiers and their families from both sides were invited in an attempt to help the nation begin its healing process, and many in attendance were reduced to tears. Imagine Anna's surprise and delight when most states in the nation were observing Mothers Day within five years of her memorial service. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday. What had started as a day of honor became associated with sending cards and giving gifts, and in protest against its commercialization, Jarvis spent the last years of her life trying to abolish the holiday she had created.

Daniel Carew (1808-1837) on June 21, 1830 at Stonington; she married (2) Nathaniel Wilgus (1793-1873) on April 5, 1852 at Buffalo, NY. Photo by B. F. Albert Palmer, pictured here at a Bayonet Course a

Albert Palmer, pictured here at a Bayonet Course at Fort McClellan, Alabama 1943. Al lived at 62 Elm Street, and graduated in the Stonington High School Class of 1940. He was born in Westerly, on May 21, 1919 to Charles B. Palmer and Mildred Main. He was drafted into the US Army, and served with the 329th infantry. He took part in the Battles of the Rhine and Elbe.

A pair miniature Chinese embroidered shoes, brough

A pair miniature Chinese embroidered shoes, brought back from China in 1860 by the Rev. Erastus Wentworth, who was at the M.E. Mission in Fuzhou (Foochow) from 1855 to 1860. When these shoes were donated by Margaret Wentworth in 1957, she provided the following family history: "My father, Erastus, was born in 1813 in the house which was sometimes called the States farm.
My father graduated from Weslyan in 1837. He became a Methodist clergyman in 1841, was president of McKendree College in 1846, Professor of Natural Science in Dickinson College, PA in 1850. In 1855 he went to FooChow as a missionary.
He married Mary Alexander in 1839 and his son, James, was born in Poultney, VT in 1841. His wife died in 1852 and in 1854 he married Anna Lewis of West Chester, PA. She bore a daughter at FooChow and died there two months later. When her baby was nineteen months old my father sent her, the boy James going on sixteen back to the U.S. with a Chinese male nurse, the boy serving as interpreter. He married my mother, Phoebe Elizabeth Potter in 1859 and they returned from China in 1861.
At one time he was editor of two ladies magazines - The Ladies Repository and Golden Hours, for children. He died in 1886. "
