When in the course of human festivities it becomes necessary to cast aside the ordinary and convene for revelry most resplendent, let it be known throughout the colony: A grand affair approaches!

By the glow of lantern light and the daring of midnight riders, we shall assemble in fine fashion to toast to liberty, bold adventure, and independence with uncommon cheer. Expect spirited libations, jubilant company, and merriment enough to make even the Sons of Liberty tap their buckled shoes.

Private First Class Harry J. Bowman, Jr. Harry wa Private First Class Harry J. Bowman, Jr.  Harry was born December 7, 1921 in Stonington to Harry Bowman and Constance Harvey, and lived at 5 Broad Street in Stonington Borough. He enlisted in the US Army, and served in the infantry of the 95th division of General Patton's 3rd Army in France.  The division was tasked with reducing the heavily fortified city of Metz in November 1944, and their intense, house-to-house fighting earned them the nickname the "Iron Men of Metz". Harry was injured in this battle, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was discharged in December of 1945.

The Honor Roll that stood in front of the Stoningt The Honor Roll that stood in front of the Stonington Free Library was designed by S. Jerome Hoxie and was built by Burrows Perry. It was unveiled by Mrs. Emily T. Wood on May 31, 1944.  Later, on Labor Day, 1945 the town had a victory celebration with a large parade, dancing in the streets, and speeches given at the Honor Roll.

Corporal James Culley, photograph taken May 1, 194 Corporal James Culley, photograph taken May 1, 1943.  James was born March 3, 1922 in Stonington and lived at 13 Cutler Street. He graduated from Stonington High School in the class of 1940, and was drafted into World War II where he served in the Air Force. During his time in the Army, James served in England, and was a member of the ground crew of the 8th Air Force. The "Mighty Eighth" was the primary US Army Air Force combat organization in Europe during World War II, and became the largest air armada in history, capable of sending 2,000 bombers and 1,000 fighters on missions. The Mighty Eighth paved the way for the D-Day invasion, and made significant contributions to the liberation of occupied Europe.

Wadawanuck Hotel and Tennis Club, 1893. If you loo Wadawanuck Hotel and Tennis Club, 1893. If you look closely you can see that the Hotel is in the process of being dismantled. The wood from this building was repurposed, and used to build homes on Main Street in Stonington Borough.
