Today marks 82 years since the invasion of Normand Today marks 82 years since the invasion of Normandy. Maurice LaGrua, well known in Stonington as a photographer, served in the US Army and was on the beach those fateful days in early June 1944. Maurice was wounded at Normandy on June 8th, but went on to fight. He received numerous medals for his service, including a Purple Heart, and a Bronze Star.

Thousands of young men made the ultimate sacrifice for global freedom and democracy. Take a moment today to thank a veteran, learn a piece of WWII history, or reflect on the peace they fought so hard to secure. We will never forget.

Eugene Bessette was born in 1918 to parents Arsene Eugene Bessette was born in 1918 to parents Arsene Bessette and Rosanna Martin. He graduated from Stonington High School in 1936, and Providence College in 1940. He enlisted in the Air Force, and became a 1st Lieutenant. Eugene served as a Flight Commander in Iceland, before he was killed in an airplane accident at Raleigh, NC in October of 1943. He was awarded the Air Medal for meritorious service.

This Memorial Day, as we remember Lt. Bessette and so many others like him who never made it home, we may not know them all, but we owe them all. Let us pause to reflect on the true price of freedom, honor our fallen countrymen, and stand united in respect of their courage and sacrifice.
