A small headstone in the Babcock Cemetery in Pawca A small headstone in the Babcock Cemetery in Pawcatuck, to the two lost daughters of Charlotte Noyes Babcock and David Babcock. David was the captain of the clipper ship "Young America", and his wife Charlotte accompanied him on numerous voyages to China, India and the Pacific. Charlotte wrote her reminiscences of her seven years at sea, which also includes her heartbreaking memories of the loss of these two infants. On losing Lulu, the first of three children who would die in childhood: "Once more at sea on the good ship "Young America", bound again for San Francisco and perhaps around the world, leaving New York this time with sad hearts because of the death of our little Lulu, who, only a few weeks after our arrival home from the Sandwich Islands and while on a visit to relatives in the country, was taken suddenly ill with inflammation of the lungs and died in a few days. This was our first sorrow, and it seemed very hard to bear. It was in the lovely month of June, snowballs were in blossom and were placed around her in her little coffin, fit emblems of her purity and innocence. Though we mourned her deeply, yet we tried to be reconciled and feel it was best, for He hath said "of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." For years, in fact to this very day, I cannot see snowballs without a pang at my heart and a vision of that lovely infant as she lay sleeping with them around her." #localhistory #motherhood #community #grief #loss #memories #chinatrade #maritime #history #love #19thcentury

Portrait of Ms. Phebe Green Denison (1839-1903), s Portrait of Ms. Phebe Green Denison (1839-1903), second wife of Captain Edgar Denison. Phebe was the daughter of Captain John Green and Clarissa Jane Denison. She was the eldest of five children, two of which did not survive their childhood. Her younger brother Lyman was killed during the Civil War at the Battle of Drewery's Bluff when he was twenty one. Phebe and her sister Sarah were the only ones who lived to old age. Historic Stonington and the America 250 Committee Historic Stonington and the America 250 Committee invite you to participate in our Pie Eating Contest at Village Fair - August 1st. Join us on the west side of Wadawanuck Square at noon to watch your friends and neighbors eat pie with aplomb. Cheer on your favorites, get hungry, and celebrate this fun and gluttonous American tradition! Interested in participating? Here’s what you need to know: There are three age brackets – 12 and Under, Teen (13-18), Adult (19+) The 12 and Under bracket will be eating a whipped cream pie with no crust. All other age groups will eat small apple pies (no nuts). (Please note we cannot accommodate food allergies.) To win, you must eat your pie faster than your opponents, hands behind your back. Spots are limited to eight per age bracket, and will be determined on a first come, first served basis. Ready to eat?
